I don’t know what to make of the fact that our university–in a city long associated with violence of many kinds–hasn’t been the site of such attacks, while schools in what I would have assumed were much more bucolic settings have.
Not that I want a student to go on a kill-crazy rampage through State Hall, mind you. I just wonder what accounts for our good fortune.
Ya know, I’ve always thought the same thing. We’re in a rather fortunate situation–the demographics of our university are *so* diverse, yet everyone accepts, tolerates, and learns from each other without violence or even disruption.
Walking back to my car last night, I wondered what it will be like once we all get jobs in schools unlike Wayne (because, granted, this school’s diversity isn’t typical) and in cities far “safer” than Detroit. And like you alluded to, we work in a city associated with violence, yet we (on campus) never see any. Finally, true, never would I want to experience a State Hall rampage…just thought I’d make that clear.
Interesting piece, KL.
